About
Located in northern Vietnam, Sơn La is known for its lush tea hills and high-altitude coffee plantations at around 1,000 m—unusual in a country where most coffee regions sit below 600 m. Combined with fertile soils and large day-night temperature swings, these conditions contribute to the region’s high-quality Arabica coffee. Coffee cultivation began here in the late 19th century under French colonial influence.
Today, Sơn La is one of Vietnam’s key Arabica-producing regions, with around 20,000 ha under cultivation and annual output of 30,000–40,000 tons. Coffee is traditionally hand-harvested to ensure even ripeness and quality, with nearly 99% exported as green beans to markets including the EU, Middle East, and US.
In 2017, the Sơn La Arabica Coffee Association was established and the region’s geographical indication was registered. Since then, coordinated efforts have significantly improved quality, value creation, and environmental and social sustainability across the sector.
